A panel that accepts only a fixed 26-bit card format may still work, provided the property’s credential structure fits that format or the BA-440 is configured with the appropriate Facility Code Shift arrangement. A controller that supports custom card formats may offer more flexibility, but its bit layout must be defined correctly. Do not use the cable shield as a substitute for the specified common conductor. Follow the panel’s grounding and shield-termination instructions so the shield does not become an unintended current path.
Barcode Automation recommends three-conductor shielded 18 AWG cable for Wiegand communication. Actual usable distance also depends on the panel, cable routing, electrical noise, splices, grounding, and surge exposure. Verify the panel manufacturer’s maximum Wiegand distance rather than applying a reader-side cable recommendation as a universal limit.
The Panel’s Reader Power Output Is Usually Not Enough
The BA-440 requires regulated 24VDC power and can draw up to 1.5 amps. Many access panels provide a lower-voltage, lower-current reader output intended for keypads, proximity readers, or card readers. A 12V reader terminal should not be used to power the BA-440, and a 24V terminal should not be used unless its available current and total panel power budget are verified.
A dedicated BA-440 power supply is commonly the cleaner arrangement. The reader’s power conductors land on the 24VDC supply, while Data 0, Data 1, and common connect to the access panel. Manufacturer guidance calls for at least 18 AWG copper on BA-440 power runs up to 200 feet. Voltage should be checked at the reader while energized because cable resistance, shared loads, corroded terminals, and splices can reduce delivered voltage.
Facility Codes and Card Numbers Must Map Correctly
The BA-440 can scan a decal successfully and still be rejected by the access panel. A beep confirms that the reader decoded a credential; it does not prove that the panel received the expected facility code, card number, or bit format. Compare the number displayed in the panel’s event log with the number assigned to the vehicle record.
This check is especially important when replacing an older BA-440, adding BC3 credentials, enabling multiple facility codes, or migrating from another label format. Current BA-440 firmware can support multiple label formats and facility codes, but the panel database and card-format definition must still match the reader output. Existing resident or employee records should be tested before the lane is returned to normal use.

The BA-440 output board is designed to provide terminal connections and additional protection for the reader electronics, but lightning and ground-potential events can still damage the panel input, communication common, or field cable. Do Not Chase Firmware When the Numbers Are Reversed
If every scan appears in the event log as the wrong number, first verify Data 0 and Data 1, the selected bit format, facility-code handling, and the panel’s card-format definition. Wiegand Integration Does Not Replace Gate Safety Logic
The BA-440 and access panel authorize entry. A valid credential should request movement; it should not bypass the operator’s safety circuit.
