Where should Barcode Automation decals be installed on cars, trucks, and SUVs for reliable reads?
Install a Barcode Automation decal on the outside of a side window, on the same side of the vehicle as the BA-440 reader. A rear side window or fixed quarter glass is normally preferred. Keep the decal vertical with its barcode stripes horizontal, with the bottom at least 36 inches and the top no higher than 65 inches above pavement.
Match the Decal Side to the Reader Side
The first placement decision is driver side versus passenger side. A BA-440 may be installed on either side of an entrance lane, but the vehicle decal must face that reader. A driver-side reader requires a driver-side decal; a passenger-side reader requires a passenger-side decal.
Use the same side at every entrance serving the same vehicles. A community that has a driver-side reader at one gate and a passenger-side reader at another may need a second credential or a revised reader layout. Do not assume the laser can read through the vehicle or reliably see a decal mounted on the opposite side.
Apply the Decal to the Outside of Window Glass
Barcode Automation decals are intended for exterior application to vehicle window glass. Do not mount the decal inside the vehicle and expect the BA-440 to read through the glass. The exterior position gives the laser a direct view of the printed barcode and allows the tamper-resistant adhesive and break-on-removal construction to function as intended.
Glass is also the preferred surface because a decal can later be scraped off without treating a painted body panel, plastic trim, or fiberglass surface as disposable. A decal placed on paint or another finish may be difficult to remove without damaging that surface. Avoid applying over rubber molding, window edges, body seams, defroster connections, or strongly curved areas that prevent the entire decal from lying flat.
Best Placement on Passenger Cars
On sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, and wagons, place the decal in an unobtrusive area of the rear side window. A fixed rear quarter window is often the cleanest location when it falls inside the required height range and faces the reader without obstruction.
A rear side location allows the vehicle to pull the credential past a reader positioned before the gate. It also keeps the decal away from the primary forward sightline. Front-door glass should be avoided when a rear window provides a valid read position, especially if the decal would distract the driver or contact the window sweep when the glass moves.
Best Placement on SUVs and Crossovers
For SUVs and crossovers, start with the rear passenger-compartment side glass or fixed quarter glass on the reader side. Do not automatically place the decal at the top of a tall SUV window. Measure from pavement to the actual decal position: the bottom should be at least 36 inches high, while the top should remain no higher than 65 inches.
Large black ceramic borders, pillars, louvers, cargo racks, and exterior accessories can block or partially cover the barcode from the reader’s viewpoint. Choose a flat, clear area of exterior glass where the full decal remains visible as the vehicle travels through the scan zone.
Best Placement on Pickup Trucks and Commercial Vehicles
On standard pickups, use the rear cab-side window or a fixed extended-cab window on the reader side, provided the complete decal remains within the 36-to-65-inch placement band. A crew-cab rear side window is commonly a better choice than the front door glass because it is farther from the driver’s sightline.
Lifted pickups, utility bodies, box trucks, delivery trucks, recreational vehicles, and other tall or wide vehicles need a site check. The BA-440 laser field expands vertically as distance from the reader increases, but vehicle width can place the decal farther away than the normal lane geometry. Barcode Automation also offers larger specialty decals for commercial trucks and recreational vehicles. Verify the exact decal format, reader distance, vehicle speed, and lane position before assuming a standard decal will cover the application.
Orient the Decal Correctly
Install the decal as a vertical rectangle with the barcode stripes running horizontally. The printed credential number should appear along the left or right edge, not across the top or bottom. Apply it straight and flat without stretching the material.
A decal that is rotated 90 degrees may still look like a barcode, but it is not in the specified scanning orientation. Wrinkles, trapped air, torn edges, or stretching can distort the bar spacing and reduce reliable recognition. Do not cut, laminate, photocopy, trim, or transfer the decal to another carrier.

A Fixed Window Is Preferred, but Height Still Controls
Fixed quarter glass avoids contact with window sweeps and cannot disappear into the door when lowered. However, a convenient fixed window is not automatically correct. Measure the installed decal height and verify that the reader can see the entire label through the vehicle’s actual path.
Reader Placement and Decal Placement Work Together
At the BA-440’s typical two-foot lane offset, the published read area is approximately 35 to 65 inches above pavement. A properly placed decal can still miss the beam when drivers travel several feet away from the intended curb line, approach on an angle, or stop before pulling the decal past the reader.
South Florida Glass Preparation Matters
Road film, spray wax, silicone-based glass products, salt residue, and sunscreen transferred from hands can weaken adhesion. Clean the exterior glass thoroughly and remove coatings before application. Work on dry glass and avoid stretching the softened decal on a sun-heated window.
Do Not Move a Decal Between Vehicles
BAi decals are designed to break or distort during removal. If a resident or employee replaces a vehicle, issue and enroll the appropriate new credential rather than attempting to peel and reuse the old one. A partially damaged decal may scan intermittently before failing completely.
Before You Apply the Decal
- Confirm whether the entrance reader is on the driver or passenger side.
- Select an exterior rear side window or fixed quarter-glass location.
- Measure at least 36 inches to the decal bottom and no more than 65 inches to its top.
- Keep the barcode stripes horizontal and the printed number on the left or right edge.
- Verify that the entire decal lies flat on clear glass.
- Check lifted trucks, wide vehicles, ramps, and unusual lane paths separately.
- Clean the glass and remove wax, silicone, dirt, salt, and other coatings.
- Test the completed placement through every entrance the vehicle will use.

Before issuing or applying a vehicle credential, verify the decal part number, label format, facility code, vehicle side, exterior-glass location, orientation, installed height, reader distance, vehicle speed, reader firmware, and access-panel programming. Similar-looking BAi decals may use different formats, sizes, speed ratings, or site-specific credential data.
