Genie 32987A.S OPTICAL INTERRUPT WHEEL
The Genie 32987A.S is a genuine OEM optical interrupt wheel (encoder wheel) installed on the motor shaft of select IC/PMX family Genie residential garage door openers. It generates optical pulses as it rotates past an IR sensor, providing feedback for door speed monitoring, precise travel control, and safety reversal functions. This part differs from the Genie 33944A.S optical interrupt wheel, which is designed for the Excelerator Pro99, CMD9900, ISD990-1, ISD990-2, and ISD1000-2 series. The 32987A.S is specific to the IC/PMX opener generation. Legacy catalog reference 50-32987A refers to the same component.
Key Features
- Mounts on motor armature shaft to provide position and speed feedback
- Interrupts optical sensor beam for door position tracking
- IC/PMX family specific - not interchangeable with 33944A.S (Excelerator Pro/CMD9900/ISD990 variant)
- Enables obstruction detection and soft-stop logic via control board pulse counting
- OEM Genie replacement part with legacy number 50-32987A

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the function of the optical interrupt wheel?
A: The optical interrupt wheel is mounted on the motor shaft and interrupts a light beam in the optical sensor as it rotates. The control board counts the interruptions to track door position and detect obstructions.
Q: Can I use GE-32987A.S on my Excelerator Pro99 or CMD9900 opener?
A: No. GE-32987A.S fits the IC/PMX opener family. The Excelerator Pro99, CMD9900, ISD990-1, and ISD990-2 series require 33944A.S, which is a different generation and size (2-1/16 in. dia, 9/16 in. deep).
Q: What are the symptoms of a faulty optical interrupt wheel?
A: Symptoms include the door not reversing when it should, erratic door stopping positions, or the opener displaying fault codes related to position sensing or motor feedback.
Q: Is 50-32987A the same part as GE-32987A.S?
A: 50-32987A is a legacy or alternate catalog number for the same part GE-32987A.S.
Q: Where exactly is the optical interrupt wheel installed in the opener?
A: The optical interrupt wheel is mounted directly on the motor armature shaft, inside the powerhead, and works in conjunction with an optical sensor (photointerrupter) on the control board.
