Barcode Automation BA-440-HE-OUTPUT Board Compatibility and Wiring Details
The Barcode Automation BAi BA-440-HE-OUTPUT is a high endurance Wiegand output and terminal board for select BA-440 DualBeam vehicle barcode readers. It provides the field connection point between the BA-440 reader, its 24 VDC power source, a compatible Wiegand access control system, vehicle-presence equipment, and approved gate or auxiliary control inputs.
Barcode Automation introduced the high-endurance output-board design to withstand more power and lightning-related events than its earlier BA-440 output board. The board helps protect the reader's primary electronics, but it should not be treated as lightning proof. Correct grounding, shielded communication cable, surge protection, and proper field wiring are still required.
What the BA-440-HE-OUTPUT Does
- Serves as the field-wiring terminal board for a compatible BA-440 reader.
- Accepts the BA-440 reader's 24 VDC power connection.
- Provides Wiegand Data 1, Data 0, and communication common terminals.
- Provides a normally open gate or good-read output.
- Provides a vehicle-presence trigger input.
- Provides a normally open auxiliary output.
- Supports optoisolated Wiegand communication when used with a compatible access panel.
- Helps protect the BA-440's primary electronics from surge and lightning-related events.
- Allows the field-output section to be serviced separately from the decoder and laser optics assembly.

Exact compatibility must be confirmed before ordering. Compare the complete BA-440 reader model, serial number, production date, existing board label, PCB revision, connector arrangement, terminal markings, mounting points, and access-panel interface. Earlier BA-440 output boards may look similar but should not be substituted by appearance alone.
Optoisolated Wiegand Operation
Barcode Automation instructions describe optoisolated Wiegand as the normal or preferred BA-440 communication arrangement. In this configuration, the reader does not supply voltage on the Data 0 and Data 1 terminals, and the communication common does not have a direct connection to the reader's power ground.
The connected access control panel or telephone entry system must provide the Wiegand line voltage and communication reference. Manufacturer instructions for earlier BA-440 board revisions indicate that approximately 5 VDC should be present from Data 0 to Comm and from Data 1 to Comm when the connected access panel supports optoisolated communication.
Some access panels do not provide the required Wiegand voltage. Older BA-440 instructions describe an alternate direct Wiegand configuration, but the exact switch and jumper procedure must be verified against the current BA-440-HE-OUTPUT board and current manufacturer instructions. Do not change switch positions or add jumpers based only on an older diagram.

Installation and Professional Advisory
Disconnect and secure the BA-440's low-voltage power before opening the enclosure or replacing the output board. Photograph and label every connection before removing conductors. Do not rely on wire color alone, and do not force a connector that does not match the replacement board.
Do not jumper communication common to reader ground or change the Wiegand isolation switch unless the current board instructions and access-panel requirements have been verified. Incorrect configuration can prevent communication or damage connected equipment.
Do not connect a gate operator, barrier operator, lock, or other load until the board's output rating and the receiving equipment's input requirements have been confirmed. Use an approved isolation relay when required by the equipment documentation.
Board replacement and testing should be completed by a qualified gate, access control, or low-voltage technician. The work must not involve bypassing photo eyes, safety edges, safety loops, emergency access equipment, operator safety inputs, or other required entrapment protection devices.
Product Questions & Answers
What does the BA-440-HE-OUTPUT board do?
The BA-440-HE-OUTPUT serves as the BA-440 reader's field terminal board for 24 VDC power, Wiegand communication, gate output, vehicle-presence input, and auxiliary output connections. It also helps protect the primary reader electronics from surge and lightning-related events.
Is the BA-440-HE-OUTPUT a complete BA-440 reader?
No. It is an internal output board only. The decoder, laser optics, enclosure, power supply, mounting post, vehicle decals, and field wiring are separate.
Is the BA-440-HE-OUTPUT Wiegand connection optoisolated?
BA-440 manufacturer instructions describe optoisolated Wiegand as the normal or preferred configuration. The connected access panel must provide the required voltage on Data 0 and Data 1 and the communication reference.
Will the BA-440-HE-OUTPUT fit every BA-440 reader?
Exact compatibility must be verified from the reader model, serial number, production date, existing PCB label, connector arrangement, terminal markings, mounting points, and current replacement documentation.
Does this board select the BA-440 Wiegand bit format?
No. The board provides Data 1, Data 0, and communication common terminals. The 26-, 30-, or 31-bit format is determined by the BA-440 reader and access system configuration.
Can the BA-440 use direct Wiegand when the access panel does not support optoisolation?
Older manufacturer instructions describe a direct Wiegand configuration for panels that do not supply the required line voltage. Confirm the current board revision, switch position, jumper requirements, and manufacturer instructions before making changes.
Will replacing this board fix a reader that scans decals but does not open the gate?
It may if the output board has failed, but the problem can also involve access programming, an inactive credential, field wiring, an external relay, the gate input, the power supply, or the operator control circuit.
Should BA-440-HE-OUTPUT be installed by a technician?
Yes. Replacement requires correct power polarity, Wiegand configuration, output verification, grounding, surge-protection checks, and safe testing of the connected access and gate equipment.
