BEA 10R2E-100, R2E-100 Security Sensor
The BEA 10R2E-100 is the R2E-100 active infrared request-to-exit sensor used on secure interior access-control doors. Instead of watching a large hallway area like a general motion detector, the R2E-100 is designed to place an active infrared detection pattern near the door handle. When a person reaches for the handle from the secure side, the sensor sends a release signal to the connected locking or access-control hardware. This targeted detection is useful where cross traffic, warm air movement, or general room motion could cause unwanted door releases. Correct installation is important because request-to-exit devices are part of the egress and security design, not just a convenience accessory.
BEA’s UL Listed R2E-100 is a request-to-exit sensor with an
active infrared (AIR) detection zone focused directly on the
door handle. This allows the R2E-100 to only detect people
intending to exit through the door as they reach for the door
handle.
The AIR based R2E-100 improves accuracy of detection as
compared to passive infrared (PIR) technology including
ground based errors, PIR sensor spoofing, known PIR
vulnerabilities (hot air, background objects, cross traffic).

Technician Note
A request-to-exit sensor affects both security and safe egress. Confirm the required fail-safe or fail-secure lock behavior, local code requirements, door hardware, and access-controller input before replacing or adding this device.
Before Ordering
- Confirm the opening is an interior protected-premise application.
- Verify the access controller accepts the sensor relay/output type.
- Confirm the electric lock and egress design meet code.
- Check mounting height, handle position, and detection aiming.
- Do not use this as a general motion detector or gate safety sensor.
- Test lock release, relock timing, and manual egress after installation.
Important Ordering Warnings
- Do not disable required egress devices or life-safety hardware when installing an RTE sensor.
Professional Advisory
Automatic pedestrian door sensors and wireless controls should be installed, adjusted, and tested by a qualified automatic door technician. Do not use an activation sensor as a substitute for required presence, safety, or monitored protection devices.
Product Questions & Answers
Where is the R2E-100 normally installed?
The R2E-100 is normally mounted on or above the secure-side door header so its active infrared zone is focused near the door handle.
Is the R2E-100 a request-to-exit device?
Yes. It is a request-to-exit sensor for access-control doors, designed to release an electric lock when a person intentionally reaches toward the handle.
Is this the same as a passive infrared motion detector?
No. The R2E-100 uses active infrared detection focused at the handle area and is intended to reduce unwanted releases from cross traffic.
Can this be used outdoors?
The R2E-100 is generally used for interior protected-premise applications. Check the site environment and product documentation before using it in exposed areas.
Does this replace a push button?
It may be used as a hands-free request-to-exit device in suitable systems, but the access-control and life-safety design must still meet code requirements.
