EMX VMD202 100FT VEHICLE MOTION DETECTOR KIT INCLUDES SENSOR FOR EXIT OR SAFETY
The EMX VMD202 100 ft vehicle motion detector is a compact one-piece vehicle detector used when an installer needs a discreet buried sensor without a traditional saw-cut loop. The probe and electronics are built into the same sealed assembly, which allows the detector to be placed next to a driveway, roadway, or controlled entrance and wired back to the gate operator or access-control equipment.
The VMD202 senses moving ferrous metal by monitoring changes in the earths magnetic field near the sensor. In gate and parking applications it is commonly used for free exit, vehicle approach detection, driveway alerts, or triggering an access-control input. It is not a vehicle presence detector and should not be relied on to hold a gate open under a stopped car.
This version includes the 100 ft lead and the VMD202-R sensitivity remote, which is used to set one of the available sensitivity levels. The setting is stored in memory after setup, so the remote can be removed or reused on other VMD202 installations when site security allows.
Proper placement is important. Large moving gate frames, reinforced concrete, nearby steel, underground utilities, and vehicle speed can all change the detection area. For dependable performance, match the lead length and power source to the installation and test the detector with the actual vehicles using the entrance.
Compatible With
Use the VMD202 with gate, door, barrier, alarm, and access-control equipment that can accept the detector output and operate within the sensor power range. Confirm whether the application needs motion detection or true vehicle presence detection.

Technician Note
The VMD202 is often used where a loop cut is not practical, but it should be tested on the actual driveway after burial depth and probe location are chosen. If the site needs a gate to remain open while a vehicle is stopped, use the correct presence detection and safety devices for that operator.
Before Ordering
- Confirm the lead length before ordering.
- Decide whether the sensitivity remote is needed or already available.
- Verify the power source and input wiring on the gate operator or access panel.
- Confirm the application is moving vehicle detection, not continuous presence detection.
- Plan sensor placement away from moving gate steel, reinforced concrete, and unwanted traffic paths.
- Test sensitivity with the expected vehicles before final backfill or concrete work.
Important Ordering Warnings
- Do not use the VMD202 as the only entrapment-protection device.
- The detector may not continue to detect a vehicle that has stopped over or near the sensor.
- Remote-kit and non-remote versions use the same detector family but differ by included setup accessory.
Professional Advisory
Low-voltage wiring should still be installed according to the operator instructions and local code. For unsafe gate movement, missing photo eyes, or unclear control wiring, have the system checked by a qualified gate technician.
Product Questions & Answers
What does the VMD202 detect?
The VMD202 detects moving ferrous vehicles by sensing changes in the magnetic field near the buried detector. It is not intended to detect people, animals, bicycles without enough ferrous metal, or stationary vehicles.
What is the VMD202-R remote used for?
The VMD202-R is used to adjust the VMD202 sensitivity level. Once the detector is set, the setting is stored in non-volatile memory.
When should I choose the 100 ft VMD202 version?
Choose the 100 ft version when that lead length matches the distance from the planned sensor location to the operator, access panel, or junction point without needing an unsupported splice.
Can the VMD202 be used on solar gate operators?
Yes, it is commonly selected for solar and low-power gate applications when the voltage range, current draw, and operator input are compatible.
Is the VMD202 a safety loop replacement?
Not by itself. It can be used for free-exit or vehicle motion detection, but closing protection and entrapment protection must be handled by the proper monitored safety devices required for the operator and site.
