Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why is a helical gear used instead of a spur gear in this application?
A: The helical gear is used in a primary reduction stage of the gearbox. Its angled teeth provide gradual tooth engagement, resulting in smoother and quieter operation compared to spur gears, and the ability to transmit higher torque loads.
Q: What special consideration applies to helical gears that does not apply to spur gears?
A: Helical gears produce axial thrust loads due to the helix angle of the teeth. The gearbox bearing arrangement is designed to absorb this thrust, so only the correct OEM replacement gear should be installed.
Q: Which specific Genie operator models use this helical gear?
A: Specific compatibility has not been confirmed from available data. The part number 108609.0001.S should be cross-referenced against the parts diagram for your specific Genie operator model before ordering.
Q: How can I tell if the helical gear needs replacement?
A: Signs include abnormal noise (whining or grinding), heat buildup in the gearbox, reduced operator speed or torque, or visible gear damage upon inspection.
Q: Is helical gear replacement a field-serviceable repair?
A: Helical gear replacement generally requires partial or full gearbox disassembly. This work should be performed by a qualified commercial door technician following the applicable Genie service manual.
