EMX VMD202-R Sensitivity Remote Controller for VMD202 Vehicle Motion Detector
The EMX VMD202-R is a sensitivity remote controller for select EMX VMD202 vehicle motion detector probes. It is used during installation or service to adjust the sensitivity of the VMD202 free-exit probe so the detector can be fine-tuned for vehicle size, approach speed, probe location, driveway layout, and site conditions.
This is the sensitivity remote/controller only. It is not the buried VMD202 probe, not a complete vehicle detector kit, not a loop detector, not a vehicle presence detector, and not a gate safety device. The VMD202 system detects moving vehicles by changes in the earth's magnetic field and should not be used as a monitored entrapment-protection device or reversing safety loop.
Primary Use
- Sensitivity adjustment remote for select EMX VMD202 vehicle motion detector probes
- Used to adjust VMD202 probe sensitivity during installation, troubleshooting, or site tuning
- Commonly used with free-exit gate applications where the VMD202 probe is installed near a driveway
- Helps fine-tune detection for vehicle mass, speed, driveway approach, probe placement, and site conditions
- Can be removed after adjustment where the VMD202 installation and documentation support that setup
Compatible With
Use the EMX VMD202-R only with compatible EMX VMD202 vehicle motion detector probes where the product documentation confirms the sensitivity remote is supported. Do not assume compatibility with other EMX probe models, loop detectors, magnetometers, or vehicle sensors based on appearance alone.
- Select EMX VMD202 vehicle motion detector probes where VMD202-R is listed as the sensitivity remote/controller
- VMD202 free-exit probe installations that require sensitivity adjustment or fine tuning
- Applications using the proper VMD202 wiring harness and power range specified for the detector system
- Installations where the VMD202 probe is used for moving-vehicle detection, not vehicle presence detection
- Repairs or service calls where the original sensitivity remote is missing, damaged, or needed for retuning

Important Comparison With Similar Vehicle Detection Parts
The VMD202-R is easy to confuse with other vehicle detection parts because it is used with a driveway probe system. It should be matched by exact part number and detector family before ordering.
- VMD202-R: Sensitivity remote/controller used to adjust select EMX VMD202 vehicle motion detector probes.
- VMD202 probe: The buried vehicle motion detector probe. This is not the same as the VMD202-R remote.
- VMD202-50 / VMD202-100 / VMD202 lead-length versions: Related vehicle motion detector probe assemblies with different lead lengths. These are not the same as the sensitivity remote.
- Loop detector: Not the same part. A loop detector uses a saw-cut or preformed loop and is commonly used for presence, safety, exit, or shadow applications depending on the detector and wiring.
- Safety/reversing loop: Not replaced by this remote. The VMD202 system is for moving-vehicle detection and should not be used as the required safety presence detector.
- Photo eye or safety edge: Not the same part and not replaced by the VMD202-R. Monitored entrapment-protection devices must remain installed and operational.

Technician Notes
- Confirm the installed detector is an EMX VMD202 before ordering this remote. The VMD202-R should not be assumed compatible with other probe models or loop detectors.
- The VMD202 detects moving ferrous metal. It will not hold a relay because a vehicle is parked over the probe, so it should not be used as a presence detector.
- If the gate is opening late, opening too early, or false-triggering, sensitivity may need adjustment, but probe placement, wire routing, grounding, power quality, nearby moving metal, and gate movement can also cause problems.
- Higher sensitivity can increase detection distance, but it may also increase nuisance triggers if the probe is too close to moving gates, metal fences, drainage grates, road traffic, or other moving metal objects.
- The VMD202 probe must remain stationary. A loose probe, unstable mounting area, moving conduit, or shifting soil can create unreliable operation.
- Do not use the VMD202-R or VMD202 system as a substitute for monitored photo eyes, safety edges, or reversing loops required for gate safety.
- If the remote LED does not behave as expected, verify power, wiring polarity where applicable, ground connection, probe wiring, and detector documentation before replacing parts.
Before Ordering Checklist
- Confirm the exact part number is VMD202-R.
- Confirm the installed detector is an EMX VMD202 vehicle motion detector probe.
- Confirm you need the sensitivity remote/controller, not the buried VMD202 probe assembly.
- Confirm the VMD202 probe wiring and power range match the remote/controller documentation.
- Confirm the system is being used for moving-vehicle detection, not vehicle presence or gate safety detection.
- Confirm the sensitivity issue is not caused by poor probe placement, loose probe mounting, grounding problems, damaged cable, incorrect power, nearby moving metal, or gate vibration.
- Confirm whether the listing includes only the remote or any probe, harness, wiring, mounting accessories, or documentation.
Professional Advisory
The EMX VMD202-R is a setup and adjustment accessory for the VMD202 vehicle motion detector system. Vehicle detector wiring may connect to gate operator inputs, access control relays, free-exit inputs, security systems, or automation equipment. If the installation involves gate operator wiring, monitored safety devices, fire access equipment, unknown prior modifications, or recurring false activations, have the system checked by a qualified gate or access control technician. Do not bypass safety photo eyes, monitored edges, reversing loops, inherent entrapment protection, fuses, grounding, or operator control protections.
Product Q&A
What is the EMX VMD202-R used for?
The EMX VMD202-R is used to adjust the sensitivity of select EMX VMD202 vehicle motion detector probes. It helps fine-tune detection distance and response for the driveway layout, vehicle speed, and site conditions.
Is VMD202-R the buried vehicle detector probe?
No. VMD202-R is the sensitivity remote/controller, not the buried VMD202 probe. If the probe itself is damaged or missing, confirm the correct VMD202 probe assembly and lead length before ordering.
Does the VMD202-R work with all EMX vehicle detectors?
No. VMD202-R should be used only with compatible EMX VMD202 vehicle motion detector probes where the documentation confirms this remote. Do not assume it works with other EMX detectors, loop detectors, or probe systems.
How many sensitivity settings does the VMD202-R provide?
The VMD202-R is commonly used to adjust 10 sensitivity settings on the VMD202 system. Lower settings reduce sensitivity, while higher settings increase detection distance where site conditions allow.
Can the VMD202-R be removed after adjustment?
Yes, where supported by the VMD202 documentation, the sensitivity setting can be retained after adjustment and the remote can be removed. Some installers may leave it connected only where tampering, power use, and site requirements are acceptable.
Can VMD202-R be used as a gate safety device?
No. VMD202-R is not a safety device, and the VMD202 system is not a vehicle presence detector. It should not replace monitored photo eyes, safety edges, reversing loops, or other required entrapment-protection devices.
What should I check if the VMD202 is false-triggering?
Check sensitivity setting, probe location, nearby moving metal, gate movement, grounding, wiring, power supply, damaged cable, and whether the probe is stable in the ground. Reducing sensitivity may help, but the site conditions should also be inspected.
