Miller Edge AW14K500-12 Air-Wave Kit Components and Service Details
The Miller Edge AW14K500-12 is a wired, non-monitored Air-Wave sensing edge kit with a 12-foot length of RAH-500 gum rubber hose. It is designed for select motorized door, gate, treadle, and industrial applications where compression of an air hose is used to activate a control contact.
When the rubber hose is compressed, an air-pressure wave travels through the connecting tube to the diaphragm inside the AW14 switch. The switch then changes its electrical contact state so the connected operator can provide its programmed stop or reverse response.
What This Air-Wave Kit Does
The AW14K500-12 provides the main components needed to assemble a basic pneumatic detection system. The 12-foot RAH-500 hose serves as the pressure-sensitive element, while the AW14 converts the resulting air pulse into an electrical contact signal.
The AW14 switch has adjustable sensitivity to help compensate for application conditions and temperature changes. It is factory configured for normally open operation but may be configured for normally closed operation according to Miller Edge instructions.
Commonly Associated Applications
- Air-Wave configured sensing edges on select motorized commercial doors
- Air-Wave configured treadles
- Select older gate operators that permit a non-monitored contact device
- Cold, wet, refrigerated, condensing, or high-vibration environments where an electric sensing edge may not be preferred
- Secondary entrapment detection where permitted by the operator manufacturer
Important Non-Monitored Compatibility Warning
The AW14K500-12 is a non-monitored system. It does not provide 10K resistance, pulsed monitoring, wireless monitoring, or a proprietary supervised safety signal.
Current Miller Edge guidance describes Air-Wave and pneumatic configurations as suitable primarily for pre-2010 commercial door operators, pre-2016 gate operators, or use as secondary entrapment protection. This does not guarantee compatibility with every older operator.
Verify the operator manufacturer, complete model number, manufacture date, control-board part number, safety-input function, required contact type, and current operator manual before ordering. Never use this kit to bypass a required monitored sensing edge, photo eye, or other entrapment-protection circuit.

Not Intended For
- Replacing a required monitored sensing edge
- Direct connection to a motor or load exceeding the contact rating
- Applications requiring a 10K or pulsed monitored signal
- Wireless installations unless the proper AW14-RF system is ordered
- Installations requiring a NEMA 4 switch enclosure
- Use based only on matching wire count or terminal labels
Technician Note
The standard AW14 switch is factory configured as normally open. Changing it to normally closed operation requires repositioning the internal air tube and readjusting sensitivity according to Miller Edge instructions. Do not assume that moving the wires to different terminals changes the contact function.
The RAH-500 hose, plugs, connecting tube, and fittings must remain airtight. A loose plug, split hose, leaking connection, blocked tube, or incorrect sensitivity adjustment can prevent reliable activation.
AW14 uses a NEMA 1 ABS enclosure. Do not confuse it with the AW12A, which places the switch in a NEMA 4 polycarbonate enclosure.
Before Ordering Checklist
- Record the operator manufacturer, model number, manufacture date, and control-board number.
- Confirm that the operator permits a non-monitored sensing device.
- Determine whether the control input requires normally open or normally closed operation.
- Verify that the input circuit remains within the AW14 contact-load rating.
- Confirm that 12 feet of RAH-500 hose is the correct required length.
- Determine whether a coil cord, retracting reel, junction box, or wireless connection is also required.
- Confirm that the AW14 NEMA 1 enclosure is suitable for the installation environment.
- Verify that monitored primary entrapment protection is installed wherever required.
Installation and Safety Advisory
Install and test the Air-Wave system according to the current Miller Edge instructions, operator manufacturer instructions, applicable electrical codes, and current door or gate safety requirements.
Do not connect the switch directly to line-voltage machinery unless the complete circuit is specifically designed within the published contact rating and serviced by a qualified technician. Do not bypass monitored photo eyes, sensing edges, safety circuits, or entrapment-protection inputs.
A qualified commercial door, gate, low-voltage, or industrial controls technician should complete the work when the required contact type, input voltage, operator monitoring method, environmental enclosure rating, or safety response is unclear.
Product Questions & Answers
What is included with the Miller Edge AW14K500-12 kit?
The kit includes one AW14 switch, silicone connecting hose, 12 feet of RAH-500 gum rubber hose, two end plugs, two wire nuts, one barbed connector, and three mounting screws. A coil cord and wireless receiver are not included.
Is the AW14K500-12 a monitored sensing edge?
No. It is a non-monitored Air-Wave system. It must not replace a monitored sensing edge or other supervised entrapment-protection device when the operator requires one.
Does the AW14K500-12 provide normally open or normally closed operation?
The AW14 is factory configured as a 2-wire normally open switch. It may be converted to normally closed operation by repositioning the internal tube and adjusting the switch according to Miller Edge instructions.
What is the difference between AW14K500-12 and AW14K500-12C?
AW14K500-12 does not include a coil cord. AW14K500-12C includes the same 12-foot hose configuration plus a 12-foot coil cord.
Can AW14K500-12 be used with any gate or commercial door operator?
No. The operator must permit a non-monitored contact device and accept the selected N.O. or N.C. circuit. Verify the operator manufacture date, control board, safety input, and current manual before ordering.
Is the AW14 enclosure NEMA 4 rated?
No. Current Miller Edge specifications identify the AW14 ABS enclosure as NEMA 1. The AW12A is the model that places the switch in a NEMA 4 polycarbonate enclosure.
What should be checked if the hose compresses but the operator does not respond?
Check for air leaks, damaged hose, loose plugs, blocked tubing, incorrect sensitivity, wrong contact configuration, damaged wiring, and an incompatible operator input. Do not bypass the safety circuit during troubleshooting.
Can the AW14 switch output be connected directly to a motor?
No. The switch is intended to signal a compatible operator control input and has a limited contact rating. Use a qualified technician when an interface relay or other control hardware may be required.
