OMRON E3K-R10K4-N4 Retro-Reflective Photoelectric Safety Sensor
The OMRON E3K-R10K4-N4 is a heavy-duty retro-reflective photoelectric safety sensor used for obstruction detection on compatible automatic gate operators, garage door operators, commercial door operators, barrier gates, and access-control openings. It is commonly installed across a driveway gate, parking lane, overhead door opening, or controlled entry point to help detect a vehicle, person, cart, trailer, or object in the protected area.
This sensor uses a retro-reflective layout. The powered OMRON E3K sensor mounts on one side of the opening and aims at a reflector mounted on the opposite side. The sensor sends an infrared beam to the reflector, and the reflector returns the beam back to the sensor. When the beam is interrupted, the sensor changes relay state and signals the connected gate or door operator through the proper safety, stop, reverse, close-protect, open-protect, or monitored entrapment input.
Retro-reflective photoeyes are often used in gate automation because they simplify field wiring. Unlike a through-beam photoeye, which requires powered wiring on both sides of the opening, this style normally requires powered wiring only on the sensor side. The opposite side uses a reflector. That can save installation time on driveways, parking lanes, and gate openings where trenching or conduit work across the opening is difficult.
The E3K-R10K4-N4 is commonly associated with long-range gate safety applications. It is often listed with a sensing distance up to 40 feet when used with the proper reflector and correct alignment. It also offers terminal-strip wiring, selectable Light-ON / Dark-ON operation, a rugged relay output, and outdoor-rated housing features that make it a common choice in gate, commercial door, and industrial access-control work.
This is not a universal plug-in replacement for every gate opener photoeye. Compatibility depends on the operator control board, available voltage, safety input style, relay contact wiring, monitored-device requirement, and current UL325 entrapment protection requirements. Some newer operators require a monitored safety device and may not accept a standard relay-output photoeye unless it is wired in the approved monitored configuration.
What This Sensor Does
- Provides non-contact obstruction detection across a gate, door, or controlled opening
- Uses one powered sensor and one reflector for retro-reflective beam detection
- Sends a relay signal to a compatible operator or control board when the beam is blocked
- May be used for stop, reverse, close-protect, open-protect, safety, or monitored entrapment inputs where supported
- Helps protect vehicle and pedestrian areas when installed according to the operator manual
- Reduces the need to run powered wiring to both sides of the opening compared with a through-beam set
Common Use Cases
- Replacing an existing OMRON E3K-R10K4-N4 safety sensor
- Replacing an OMRON E3K-R10K4 retro-reflective photoeye in a gate safety system
- Adding a reflective photoeye to a compatible slide gate operator

Confirm the operator manual before ordering or installing this sensor.
Retro-Reflective Sensor Layout
A retro-reflective installation uses the OMRON E3K sensor on one side of the opening and a reflector on the opposite side. The sensor and reflector must face each other directly. If the reflector is loose, dirty, cracked, misaligned, or mounted where vibration affects the beam, the operator may show safety faults, nuisance reversals, or refuse to close.
For gate applications, the sensor location should be selected based on the operator manual and the entrapment zone being protected. Some installations require protection in the closing direction, opening direction, or both. More than one photoeye, safety edge, loop detector, or monitored entrapment device may be required depending on the gate type, operator class, and site layout.
Not Intended For
- Every gate opener without checking the operator manual
- Operators requiring a proprietary monitored photoeye unless approved by the operator manufacturer
- Operators that require a through-beam transmitter and receiver pair instead of a reflective sensor
- Applications where the reflector cannot be mounted securely across from the sensor
- Direct switching of gate motors, overhead door motors, maglocks, or high-voltage operator power
- Replacing a loop detector, vehicle detector, safety edge, receiver, access control board, or control station
- Unsafe gates with binding hinges, damaged rollers, dragging hardware, worn tracks, or unresolved mechanical problems
- Replacing a monitored UL325 safety device unless the operator supports this sensor and wiring method

Related items and accessories: 3 inch reflector, mounting bracket, reflector hood, protective cover, 10K resistor monitoring kit or resistor-equipped version where supplied, terminal-strip wiring hardware, and replacement reflector may be related to this sensor depending on the exact packaging. Confirm what is included before publishing or ordering.
Similar OMRON E3K sensors that may not be interchangeable: Other E3K versions may use a different sensing method, voltage range, output type, relay configuration, monitoring method, or included reflector. Do not substitute a diffuse reflective, through-beam, AC-only, DC-only, non-monitored, or different monitored version without checking the operator wiring diagram.
Technician Note
The most important check is not whether the sensor turns on. The important check is whether the operator recognizes the photoeye correctly. A gate operator may need a normally closed input, normally open input, monitored normally closed input, 10K monitored input, or manufacturer-specific monitored safety device. Match the wiring to the operator manual before replacing or adding the sensor.
For many gate systems, the E3K is set to the proper Light-ON or Dark-ON mode and wired to the correct relay terminals based on the operator safety input. Some monitored installations require the sensor to be powered from a monitored output on the gate operator. If the sensor is powered from the wrong source, the beam may work at the photoeye but the operator may still reject it as an unmonitored or failed safety device.
Alignment matters. The sensor and reflector must be mounted solidly, aimed correctly, and kept clean. Dirt, sprinkler water, vibration, loose posts, direct sun, damaged reflectors, insects, and water inside conduit can all cause nuisance reversals or safety faults.

- The required bracket, reflector, resistor, and wiring hardware are included or ordered separately.
- The photoeye location matches the required opening or closing entrapment zone.
- The gate or door moves freely and does not have mechanical binding, dragging rollers, worn hinges, damaged tracks, or control-board faults.
Professional Advisory
This sensor is part of a gate or door safety system. Installation should be performed by a qualified gate, garage door, commercial door, or access-control technician when the operator wiring, monitored safety input, or UL325 entrapment protection requirements are not clearly understood.
Never bypass, remove, or disable required photoeyes, safety edges, loop detectors, monitored entrapment protection, or other safety devices to make an operator run. If the operator will not close because of a photoeye fault, the fault should be diagnosed and corrected instead of bypassed.
After installation, test the gate or door in every required direction and mode. Confirm that the operator stops, reverses, or responds correctly when the beam is blocked, and verify that all other required safety devices remain installed and working.
Product Q&A
Is the OMRON E3K-R10K4-N4 compatible with all gate openers?
No. It may be used with many compatible gate operators, but it is not automatically compatible with every gate opener. The operator must support the correct voltage, relay-output wiring, and monitored safety-device method required for the installation.
Is this a retro-reflective photoeye?
Yes. The OMRON E3K-R10K4-N4 uses a retro-reflective sensor layout with one powered sensor and a reflector mounted across the opening.
Does this sensor include a reflector and bracket?
Many E3K gate safety kits are listed with a bracket and 3 inch reflector, but included items can vary by supplier and packaging. Confirm the product contents before ordering if the reflector or bracket is needed.
Can this be used for UL325 monitored gate safety?
It may be used in certain UL325 gate safety applications only when the operator supports the required monitored wiring method. Some installations require a 10K monitored configuration or a specific monitored safety input, so the operator manual must be checked.
What is the typical sensing range?
This sensor is commonly listed with a sensing distance up to 40 ft when installed with the proper reflector and correct alignment. Actual range can be reduced by dirt, sunlight, vibration, weak mounting, damaged reflectors, or poor alignment.
What should I check if the gate will not close after installing this sensor?
Check sensor power, Light-ON / Dark-ON setting, reflector alignment, relay terminal selection, N.O. or N.C. wiring, monitored-output power, 10K resistor requirements, and the operator safety input. A gate that will not close is often caused by wiring, alignment, or monitoring mismatch rather than a bad sensor.
