EMX TRES-900-WS421 Windshield Tag Compatibility and Mounting Details
The EMX TRES-900-WS421 is a passive UHF RFID windshield credential designed for automatic vehicle identification, gated-community access, parking facilities, toll collection, fleet entrances, and other vehicle-access applications.
The tag is mounted to the vehicle windshield and read by a compatible EMX Patriot UHF RFID reader. Because it is a passive credential, the tag does not require a replaceable battery. The reader supplies the RF energy needed for the tag to return its programmed credential information.
Important Part Number Suffixes
TRES-900-WS421 identifies the windshield-tag family. The final suffix identifies the tag appearance, printing, and order configuration. Verify the complete suffix before ordering.
| Part Number | Documented Configuration |
| TRES-900-WS421G | Standard windshield tag with generic TRES logo graphics, approximately 4 x 1 inches |
| TRES-900-WS421W | Plain-white windshield tag, approximately 4 x 1 inches |
| TRES-900-WS421C | Custom-labeled windshield tag with approved custom graphics, approximately 4 x 1 inches; published minimum order of 1,000 |
| TRES-900-WS421-OVAL | Custom oval windshield-style tag with printing up to four colors, approximately 4.5 x 2.5 inches |
The base TRES-900-WS421 number does not identify the graphics, exact encoding, or package quantity. Confirm the complete suffix and programmed credential requirements before placing an order.
What the WS421 Tag Does
A compatible Patriot reader transmits UHF radio energy toward the vehicle lane. The WS421 tag receives that energy and returns its stored identification data to the reader. The reader then sends the credential information to the connected access controller or uses its configured authorization function.
The access controller determines whether the credential is valid based on the programmed facility code, credential number, access level, schedule, and reader assignment. The windshield tag does not contain a gate relay, user database, or access schedule by itself.
Compatible EMX Reader Families
- EMX PATRIOT-E circular-polarized long-range UHF RFID reader
- EMX PATRIOT-L linear-polarized long-range UHF RFID reader
- EMX PATRIOT-MR mid-range passive UHF RFID reader
- Select other EMX 900 MHz Patriot reader systems that specifically support EPC Gen2 windshield credentials
Exact compatibility depends on the reader model, regional frequency, firmware, enabled credential format, tag encoding, facility code, and access-controller configuration.
Expected System Read Range
EMX publishes average reader-system ranges of approximately 18 to 25 feet for PATRIOT-E and PATRIOT-L readers and approximately 6 to 10 feet for the PATRIOT-MR. These are reader-system values and are not a guaranteed tag-specific distance.
Actual read range can be reduced by windshield construction, metallic tint, reader aiming, tag orientation, vehicle position, nearby metal, RF reflections, reader power settings, electrical interference, and the selected mounting location.
Credential Encoding and Wiegand Format
The standard WS421 versions use an Impinj Monza 4D UHF Gen2 tag chip. The tag must still be encoded to match the reader and access-control system.
Verify the following before ordering programmed credentials:
- Required Wiegand bit format
- Facility or site code
- Starting credential number
- Ending credential number
- Required numbering sequence
- Reader model and firmware
- Access-controller input format
- Existing credential database requirements
A tag can be readable at the RF level while still being rejected by the access controller because of an incorrect Wiegand format, facility code, credential number, or enrollment record.
Patriot-E Tag Orientation
The PATRIOT-E uses a circular-polarized antenna and can read compatible tags mounted vertically or horizontally. EMX recommends vertical mounting whenever practical because it normally provides the best read range.
When the reader is installed on the driver's side of the lane, the tag should normally be tested on the driver's side of the vehicle. Use the passenger side when the reader is positioned on that side of the lane.
Patriot-L Tag Orientation
The PATRIOT-L uses a linear, vertically polarized antenna. Tags used with this reader must be mounted vertically. Horizontal mounting should not be used for a PATRIOT-L installation.
For a PATRIOT-L system, EMX identifies the upper windshield corner on the reader side as a common high-performance location. A vertical position near the rear-view mirror may work better on vehicles with metallic windshield coatings.
Test Before Permanent Installation
Do not remove the adhesive backing until the tag location has been tested. Temporarily secure the tag with painter's tape or another low-adhesion tape and drive the vehicle through the intended read zone.
Test the tag at both of these locations:
- The point where the reader should first identify the vehicle
- The stopping point where the vehicle will wait if the gate has not opened
If the tag does not read reliably at both locations, reposition it and repeat the test. The best location can vary between vehicle models and installation sites.
Permanent Adhesive Warning
After the windshield tag is permanently attached, it cannot normally be removed and repositioned without damaging the tag. Attempting to move it can reduce the read range or make the tag unreadable.
A slightly crooked tag that has already tested correctly is generally better than removing and reinstalling it.
Windshield Mounting Locations
- Upper windshield corner on the same side as the reader
- Lower windshield corner on the same side as the reader
- Near the rear-view mirror in the vehicle's designated RFID window
- Another tested windshield location that remains clear of metal and metallic coatings
The tag may be installed on the inside or outside of the windshield when the selected location has been tested successfully. An interior installation is generally less exposed to weather, washing, scraping, and physical damage.
Metal Separation
Keep the tag approximately 2 to 3 inches away from metal whenever possible. Windshield frames, roof pillars, embedded antennas, mirrors, brackets, and nearby body panels can reduce performance.
WS421 windshield tags are electrically tuned for mounting on glass. They may not provide the same performance when installed on plastic, headlights, painted body panels, metal, or other surfaces.
Metallic and Heat-Reflective Windshields
Some vehicles use an invisible metal-oxide windshield coating for heat or UV control. This coating can severely reduce UHF RFID performance, especially near the windshield edges.
Many coated windshields include an uncoated RFID window near the rear-view mirror. Consult the vehicle owner's information to locate this area. The entire tag should fit inside the RFID window for reliable performance.

Technician Note
A Patriot reader that beeps but does not open the gate may be reading the WS421 tag correctly. Check the Wiegand format, facility code, credential enrollment, access schedule, reader assignment, controller wiring, relay output, and gate-operator input before replacing the tag.
If one vehicle has poor range while other vehicles read correctly, test another tag position. Metallic windshield coatings, embedded antennas, windshield angle, nearby metal, and tag orientation commonly cause vehicle-specific performance differences.
Professional Advisory
The WS421 is an access credential and does not detect vehicles or obstructions. It must not replace loop detectors, photo eyes, safety edges, monitored inputs, emergency access equipment, fire access, or other required gate-safety devices.
Product Questions and Answers
Which EMX readers are compatible with the TRES-900-WS421 windshield tag?
The WS421 is intended for compatible EMX Patriot UHF RFID systems, including PATRIOT-E, PATRIOT-L, and PATRIOT-MR readers. Verify the reader frequency, firmware, credential format, and tag encoding before ordering.
What is the difference between WS421G, WS421W, and WS421C?
WS421G has generic TRES graphics, WS421W is plain white, and WS421C is custom labeled from an approved graphics proof. EMX publishes a minimum order of 1,000 for the custom WS421C version.
Can a WS421 tag be mounted horizontally?
It may be mounted vertically or horizontally with a PATRIOT-E reader, although vertical mounting normally provides better range. A PATRIOT-L reader requires the tag to be mounted vertically.
Can the windshield tag be moved to another vehicle?
No. The permanent adhesive tag cannot normally be removed and repositioned without damaging it, reducing its range, or making it unreadable. Use a removable hang tag when credentials must move between vehicles.
Where should the WS421 tag be mounted on the windshield?
Test the upper or lower windshield corner on the same side as the reader or the vehicle's RFID window near the rear-view mirror. Keep the tag approximately 2 to 3 inches from metal.
Will metallic window tint affect the windshield tag?
Yes. Metal-oxide and heat-reflective windshield coatings can severely reduce UHF RFID range. Locate the vehicle's uncoated RFID window and test the tag there before permanent installation.
What read range should be expected from a WS421 tag?
Read range is determined by the complete reader-and-tag installation. EMX publishes approximately 18 to 25 feet for PATRIOT-E and PATRIOT-L systems and 6 to 10 feet for PATRIOT-MR, but actual range is site and vehicle dependent.
Does the base TRES-900-WS421 number identify the tag quantity and programming?
No. The base number identifies the windshield-tag family. Confirm the complete suffix, order quantity, graphics, Wiegand format, facility code, credential numbers, and reader compatibility before ordering.
