Miller Edge AW10 Bare Air-Wave Switch Technical Details
The Miller Edge AW10 is a standalone, non-monitored pneumatic Air-Wave switch supplied without an external protective enclosure. It is commonly associated with compatible Miller Edge Air-Wave sensing edges and treadles that use air pressure to activate a commercial door, gate, or industrial control input.
When the connected sensing edge, treadle, or air hose is compressed, an air-pressure wave travels to the internal diaphragm. The diaphragm operates the electrical contact so the connected control system can provide its programmed stop, reverse, open, close, light, or alarm response.
What the AW10 Switch Does
The AW10 converts a pneumatic pressure pulse into a momentary electrical contact. The switch mechanism does not require a separate power supply, but it must be connected to a compatible control circuit that remains within the published contact rating.
The AW10 is factory configured as a 2-wire normally open switch. It can be field-configured for normally closed operation by changing the pneumatic tube connection and readjusting the sensitivity according to current Miller Edge instructions.
Compatible With
- Miller Edge Air-Wave configured sensing edges up to 60 feet long
- Miller Edge Air-Wave configured treadles
- Select commercial door operators accepting a non-monitored contact input
- Select older gate operators accepting a non-monitored edge or control input
- Secondary detection inputs where permitted by the operator manufacturer
- Control circuits within the published AW10 contact rating
Important No-Enclosure Warning
The AW10 is supplied without an external protective enclosure. The switch mechanism should not be mounted where it is exposed to direct rain, washdown, uncontrolled condensation, debris, impact, or other conditions requiring a rated enclosure.
When environmental protection is required, compare the AW12A with its NEMA 4 polycarbonate enclosure or the AW14 with its NEMA 1 ABS enclosure. Do not assume that placing the AW10 inside an unlisted box automatically provides the same rating as a factory-enclosed model.
Important Non-Monitored Compatibility Warning
The AW10 does not provide 10K resistance, pulsed monitoring, wireless supervision, or proprietary monitored communication. It must not replace a monitored sensing edge or other supervised entrapment-protection device when the operator requires one.
Current Miller Edge selection guidance generally associates Air-Wave and pneumatic systems with pre-2010 commercial door operators, pre-2016 gate operators, or secondary entrapment protection where permitted. These are general selection guidelines and do not guarantee compatibility with a particular operator.
Verify the operator manufacturer, complete model number, manufacture date, control-board part number, input function, contact requirement, and current operator manual before ordering.
Normally Open and Normally Closed Operation
The AW10 ships factory configured for normally open operation. Compressing the connected Air-Wave edge causes the switch contact to close momentarily.
Normally closed operation requires moving the clear pneumatic tube from the center coupling to the side elbow and readjusting the sensitivity. The contact function is not changed simply by moving electrical wires to different tabs.
After any configuration or sensitivity adjustment, test the complete system repeatedly to verify dependable activation without nuisance signals caused by normal door movement or vibration.

Technician Note
The AW10 has no external enclosure. The installer must determine whether a suitable listed enclosure is required for protection from moisture, dirt, impact, or contact with energized components. For a factory-enclosed assembly, compare AW12A or AW14.
The air hose, plugs, tubing, and fittings must remain airtight. A split hose, loose plug, blocked tube, leaking connection, incorrect sensitivity adjustment, or excessive vibration can cause missed activations or nuisance reversals.
The AW10 contact is intended to signal a compatible operator control input. Do not connect it directly to a motor or another load exceeding the published contact rating.
Before Ordering Checklist
- Record the operator manufacturer, model number, manufacture date, and control-board part number.
- Confirm that the operator permits a non-monitored Air-Wave input.
- Determine whether normally open or normally closed operation is required.
- Verify that the control circuit remains within the AW10 contact rating.
- Determine what protective enclosure is required for the installation.
- Identify the correct sensing-edge profile, hose diameter, plugs, connector, and tubing.
- Determine whether a coil cord, retracting reel, junction box, or wireless system is required.
- Confirm that all required monitored entrapment-protection devices remain installed and operational.
Installation and Safety Advisory
Installation, enclosure selection, sensitivity adjustment, contact conversion, wiring, and testing must follow current Miller Edge instructions, operator manufacturer instructions, applicable electrical codes, and current door or gate safety requirements.
Never use the AW10 to bypass a monitored safety input or conceal a sensing-edge fault. Do not connect the switch directly to machinery or loads beyond its published contact rating.
A qualified commercial door, gate, low-voltage, or industrial-controls technician should complete the work when the contact type, operator input, enclosure requirement, circuit voltage, or required safety response is unclear.
Product Questions & Answers
What is the Miller Edge AW10?
The AW10 is a standalone pneumatic Air-Wave pressure switch without an external protective enclosure. It converts an air-pressure pulse from a compatible sensing edge or treadle into an electrical contact signal.
Is the AW10 a monitored sensing-edge switch?
No. The AW10 is non-monitored and does not provide 10K resistance, pulsed monitoring, wireless supervision, or another supervised safety signal.
Does the AW10 ship normally open or normally closed?
The AW10 is factory configured for 2-wire normally open operation. It can be changed to normally closed operation by moving the pneumatic tube to the side elbow and readjusting sensitivity according to Miller Edge instructions.
Does the AW10 include a protective enclosure?
No. AW10 is the switch mechanism without an external enclosure. AW12A contains the AW10 in a NEMA 4 polycarbonate enclosure, while AW14 contains it in a NEMA 1 ABS enclosure.
What sensing-edge length can the AW10 support?
Miller Edge specifies compatibility with Air-Wave configured sensing edges up to 60 feet. Hose condition, airtight connections, sensitivity adjustment, and the complete application must still be checked.
Does the AW10 include air hose or a complete sensing edge?
No. The standard AW10 listing is for the pressure switch. Hose, plugs, sensing-edge material, enclosure, coil cords, junction boxes, and other installation components are separate.
Can the AW10 be connected directly to a door or gate motor?
No. The AW10 is intended to signal a compatible operator control input. Its contact rating is limited to 0.5 amp at 220 VAC or 1 amp at 48 VDC, and an interface relay may be required for other loads.
What should be checked when an AW10 causes missed activations or nuisance reversals?
Check the sensing hose for leaks or blockage, inspect all plugs and fittings, confirm the N.O. or N.C. configuration, verify the wiring, and readjust sensitivity. Do not bypass the operator safety circuit during troubleshooting.
